So here we are sitting in this huge room at Polygram records in front of about seven people and they start talking to me along with the dance instructors. They said a new guy is going to take the Country charts like crazy and there is a Line dance to go with it. The Toronto Sun is on board along with all Country stations and easy listening (example 10:50 chum) stations across Canada. We were pumped to hear this as they continued to say we would be playing every day for 30 days along with 2 gigs on Saturday and Sunday. Wow I could not believe we were going to be doing something like this and just couldn’t wait to find out who this act was. Then they showed us the instructional video and it floored us. Finally after almost one hour in the office they finally introduced the act to us. His name was {Did you guess it yet?}. Yep BILLY RAY CYRUS with the song ACHY BREAKY HEART. So, with all this soaked up we made an agreement to take on the Challenge and what a challenge it was. The song was finally released to Radio and we started doing the Achy Breaky Dance tour in Canada. We SOLD out everywhere and even had to stay and teach it 3 times in one night because so many people wanted to learn it.
Well everyone, it finally came to an end but wow it was great! I know people had a ball. Once everything was settled we were supposed to all meet Billy Ray and just when we were all going to have the Meet and Greet that week my mom passed away and I missed it– but hey the dance teachers got to meet him and get pictures. They told me I would get a chance one day but so far to this day no luck.
Teachers Gord and Georgina with Billy Ray Cyrus
We did go see him in 2019 and tried to meet him but his manager was not very nice and actually got me kicked out. He would not listen to one word I said to him about being part of Billy Ray. I felt kind of heart broken but one thing I know 100% it’s not Billy Ray’s fault so that makes me feel good inside.
I need to say that Canada just went crazy over him. They fell in love with Billy Ray Cyrus because he was so humble and always thankful. As I mentioned I can remember going to see him a few months back and even though he was not here for years he remembered a bunch of girls that followed him for years and he chatted with them throughout the night on stage. It was great to see!
